6/10 - What's In A Name?
|

So, congratulations are in order for Jessica Alba and Cash Warren-- proud parents of a brand new baby girl, born over the weekend in Los Angeles. Both mom and daughter are doing fine, we're told, and the proud parents have named the little bundle of joy, Honor Marie Warren.
Can't say I've ever heard of the name Honor, but it does have a kind of regal sound to it, doesn't it? We've all heard the sometimes-- how shall I say this-- off-the-beaten-path names celebrites have hung on their kids. Apple, Moxie, Rumor and, of course, Moon Unit, all come to mind. And not that it matters at all, but I kinda like Honor. And though we haven't heard, maybe it has a deeper meaning for Jessica or Cash too. Perhaps it's an old family name. Or one that's been a favorite for years. Doesn't really matter, I guess.
We don't have kids, so I've never had the task of naming an offspring, but I know my folks used this little device: My dad's name is Charles, so all the boys have names that begin with 'C'. (That'd be me and ,y brother, Clay.) Meanwhile, my mom's name is Kathy, so all the girls have names that begin with 'K'. (That'd be my sister, Kimberly.) And, my folks have said that Kimberly was the name they would have given me, had I been born a girl. Now THERE'S some planning.
The only thing I've had to name are the dogs-- my original bud, Dexter, whose name was suggested by my brother (who's a musician and was famililar with tenor sax player, Dexter Gordon); and Kramer-- so named because he was so gangly as a puppy, he'd fly across the kitchen floor and take out the garbage can, just like Michael Richards' character from Seinfeld. Each time, though, I kinda waited a few days to get a sense of each dog's unique personality before I hung a name on them. (I liked 'Frankie' for Dexter, in honor of Frank Sinatra, but he just didn't seem like a 'Frankie'...) I don't guess you don't have that luxury when your children are born, though, do you...
