7/4 - Happy Independence Day!
|

Did you notice the title of today's entry? Even though the nifty graphic of Uncle Sam points out that today is, in fact, the 4th of July, I'm once again renewing my push for the celebration of our nation's birth to be officially called "Independence Day," and that it always be observed on the first Friday in July. An ammendement would decree that all local fireworks shows will also be held on Friday (Saturday if there's inclemet weather).
Think about it: You'd always get a three-day weekend, and you'd always be able to stay up late to watch the local fireworks and set your own off afterwords, all WITHOUT having to go to work the next day. (Except for some of us, that is. Note that I'm posting this blog WHILE I'M AT WORK ON THE 4TH OF JULY...) So, what's not to like? Hey, we've already moved the official celebration of Washington and Lincoln's birthdays into a new holiday-- President's Day-- of which the date has no real meaning, so why not Independence Day? (Oh sure, you purists out there can STILL celebrate the 4th of July ON the 4th of July, we'll just called it '4th of July Observed'...)
So stand up for your right as an American to have a guaranteed three-day weekend every year to celebrate the greatest nation on earth! Write your congressman today! Tell them to support the Independence Day 1st Friday In July movement! You'll be glad you did! |
